An $87.5 million settlement between the Diocese of Camden and plaintiffs bringing clergy sexual abuse suits is seen by some as pointing the way to victory for other such plaintiffs throughout the state.

The diocese's settlement with roughly 300 plaintiffs ends more than a year of fighting in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The settlement, which was reached in mediation with Jose Linares of McCarter & English, a former chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, is subject to approval by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Jerrold Poslusny Jr. Besides the $87.5 million from the diocese, the settlement calls for plaintiffs to receive an assignment of the Diocese's rights against its insurance companies, said the survivors' committee.
