Tradition is only helpful to the extent the future will be like the past. The advent of e-filing marks a departure from the past that improves legal practice but also can present challenges.

Over the last few years, technology has forever changed our practice with innovations that allow attacking any workload more quickly, cheaply, and efficiently. Most important, technology expands our geographic reach to clients, courts and each other, improving global interactions.  Examining strides made over the past few years, surprisingly leads some to perceive a future where artificial intelligence dominates the legal profession, possibly eliminating some roles for lawyers and judges. While that can be the topic for another day, for now, let’s focus on a simpler technological advancement and discuss common pitfalls posed by e-filing a notice of appeal.
