In a notice to the bar, Directive #14-22 laid out new procedures for carry permit applications for handguns in New Jersey that removed the state’s judiciary from the initial permitting process, following the U.S. Supreme Court decision in N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen.

Earlier this month, Gov. Phil Murphy signed A4769/S3214 into law, which amended the application process for carry permits and strengthened restrictions for those eligible to hold a public carry permit. The new law also established a list of places where, even with a carry permit, guns are prohibited. Under the new law, “showings of particularized need are no longer legally viable to determine whether a person may carry a handgun in public.”
