Criminal LawOn Jan. 7, 2023, officers from the Memphis Police Department's (MPD) Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, also known as the Scorpion Unit, conducted a motor vehicle stop of Tyre Nichols. Video footage depicting the incident showed officers being physically forceful, yelling at him (when it appeared unnecessary), and eventually beating him until he was unconscious. Sadly, Nichols succumbed to his injuries three days later. The irony of the title of this unit is not lost.
