A $1.75 million settlement was reached on Feb. 27 in a Union County medical malpractice suit, Dharia v. Carotenuto, brought on behalf of a 51-year-old woman who suffered irreparable damage to her eyes after a delay in detecting glaucoma.

Plaintiff Rupa Dharia of Mountainside had received routine eye care from defendant David Carotenuto, O.D., and Family Vision Health Center since April 2016. During her yearly visits, Dharia underwent dilated eye exams, which included tonometry pressure readings to evaluate the health of her optic nerve. Intraocular pressure measurements are used to detect glaucoma, according to her counsel, Bruce H. Nagel and Susan F. Connors of Nagel Rice in Roseland.
