The New Jersey Supreme Court should establish a committee to review and recommend improvements in the attorney disciplinary system. In March 2023, the New Jersey State Bar Association—after consulting with experts, conducting surveys of all of its members, review of numerous documents, and interviewing lawyers who represented respondents in disciplinary proceedings—issued the report of the Putting Lawyers First Task Force. The recommendation was that the Supreme Court establish an ongoing committee on lawyers’ and judicial wellbeing under the Administrative Office of the Courts and a commission to study concerns that lawyers have regarding the effectiveness of the current attorney disciplinary system.

The Supreme Court quickly responded to one of the task force’s recommendations and established a “Special Committee on Wellness in the Law” under the chairmanship of Justice Lee Solomon. The surveys revealed that there is an alarming number of attorneys who have severe and consequential problems resulting from the stress in the practice of the law.
