New Jersey announced a proposed $393 million settlement Wednesday with Solvay Specialty Polymers to remediate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination and to compensate the public for natural resource damages around the West Deptford Solvay facility in Gloucester County.

The proposed settlement was announced by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the state's Commissioner of Environmental Protection, Shawn M. LaTourette, called the settlement the "first of its kind."

In addition to its financial terms, the settlement included a commitment by Solvay to fund and implement remediation in the area of their West Deptford facility, provide upgrades to the public water system to remove PFAS from drinking water administered by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and to address certain impacts of PFAS on public drinking water systems and private potable drinking water wells in the vicinity.
