In March 2023, in a published opinion, the Appellate Division reversed a 2021 finding of the acting state education commissioner that the 5,500 mostly Hispanic, Black and poor students in the Lakewood Public Schools are receiving a thorough and efficient education. Alcantura v. Commissioner (Docket No. A-3693-20).

In reaching her decision, the commissioner relied on the fact that the Lakewood schools do not suffer the stark physical plant deficiencies (no hot water in restrooms, classes held in coal bins) that had previously been found to have deprived students of a constitutionally guaranteed education in other districts.
