The New Jersey Supreme Court announced Thursday that question 12B of the character and fitness questionnaire will now limit what bar applicants will be required to disclose about mental health conditions.

In a Sept. 19, 2023, notice to the bar signed by Chief Justice Stuart Rabner, the court exempted applicants from disclosing conduct or behavior related to a mental health condition for which they are being, or have been treated effectively, by a health care provider or medical professional. Also covered under this new approach is conduct related to alcohol or drug addiction that is being treated effectively in an established treatment program.
