New legislation, if signed into law, would create rights and employment protections for the state’s roughly 50,000 domestic workers who were previously excluded from certain protections offered by the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and the Wage and Hour Law.

In a vote on the Senate floor Thursday, Bill S723 passed with a vote of 24-11, and will now head to Gov. Phil Murphy’s desk. Those covered under the new law include workers employed in a residence caring for a child and those caring for an elderly, sick, convalescing or disabled person. Also included are housekeepers, house cleaners, cooks, gardeners and others performing domestic service.
