A New Jersey attorney who pleaded with the state’s top court last week to let him keep his license avoided disbarment after the court issued a divided opinion Wednesday as to whether his federal conviction for conspiracy to commit bank fraud should end his legal career.

Martin David Eagan, an attorney in Morristown, pleaded guilty in December 2015 to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to a decision issued by the Disciplinary Review Board in October.
