At oral arguments before the Appellate Division Wednesday, a three-judge panel seemed skeptical of the state's position that Jill Mayer, a confirmed nominee to the New Jersey Superior Court, "prearranged" her employment as a judge in violation of a rule that would preclude her from collecting her pension.

Mayer, who was confirmed to the Camden County Superior Court bench in January 2022, has yet to take her seat on the bench. In court Wednesday, Mayer argued that a state agency incorrectly decided a dispute over her pension after serving 26 years with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. Mayer was represented at oral arguments by William M. Tambussi of Brown & Connery, who argued that, when his client retired as acting prosecutor in Camden County on Dec. 1, 2021, she had no plans to continue working for the state of New Jersey.
