Associate Justice John Jay Hoffman made his first appearance on the New Jersey Supreme Court bench Monday, where the court weighed whether to dismiss a sexual abuse claim against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for lack of personal jurisdiction.

After being sworn in on Oct. 2, Hoffman took his seat on the bench just five days later, in time to hear the appeal in D.T. v. Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Hoffman wasted no time in acclimating to the bench. Roughly a half hour after oral arguments began, Hoffman asked his first question and challenged attorneys on both sides of the aisle in a case involving alleged sexual abuse of a minor by a Catholic priest.
