The couple, Peter DeVries and Timothy Carter, charged that the harassment continued from early 2001 to mid-2004 and that police failed to investigate or otherwise take action, even when called to respond to a verbal altercation between the couple and the firefighters.

Their suit, DeVries v. Town of Secaucus, filed by Neil Mullin of Smith Mullin in Montclair, alleged that the town violated the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and the state Civil Rights Act.
