State appeals judges soon will be based in Newark, hearing cases there for the first time since 1984, thanks to a rental arrangement that’s worth $520,000 to Essex County.

Under a planned move, perhaps as early as the end of next year, the Appellate Division will close its operations in office buildings in Springfield and Hackensack and move the chambers to Newark, Chief Justice Stuart Rabner and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr. announced on Tuesday.
