The state Supreme Court on Tuesday tried to get a handle on whether an investigator’s racial epithet played a role in the prosecution of former New Jersey Nets player Jayson Williams for reckless manslaughter, and whether it has any bearing on his upcoming retrial.
The hearing in State v. Williams , A-56-08, arose from the state’s appeal of an Appellate Division ruling that said defense lawyers could pore through redacted documents for evidence of a racial motive in the prosecution.
