Sen. Raymond Lesniak, who helped spearhead abolition of capital punishment in New Jersey, has proved himself persuasive on a world stage. On Feb. 1, the legislator-lawyer took first prize in the International Human Rights Competition for Lawyers in Caen, France.

Lesniak says he will donate the $9,740 purse from the award to The Road to Justice and Peace, a nonprofit organization he formed to advocate an end to capital punishment worldwide.
