Stephen Townsend, who as clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court was an eyewitness and participant in 30 years of Court history, will retire on May 1 and be succeeded by one of his assistants, Mark Neary.

Chief Justice Stuart Rabner announced the changes Monday, calling Townsend’s departure “the end of an extraordinary era.”
