In a year that marked the start of a recession, New Jersey’s major law firms expanded their pro bono efforts, racking up a record number of hours. The firms posted 95,565 hours, up 4.7 percent from last year.

While the state’s perennial pro bono leaders — McCarter & English, Lowenstein Sandler and Gibbons — were at or near the top in this year’s annual Pro Bono Survey, the big surprise is the ascent of Porzio, Bromberg & Newman.
