A federal judge in Newark on Friday refused to grant bail to former Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Bergrin, who stands indicted on charges of leading a racketeering conspiracy that included the murder of a drug-case witness and the attempted murder of an informant.
Bergrin had sought release on $1 million bail and to be allowed to remain on 24-hour home detention until trial, but prosecutors opposed bail in any amount, saying Bergrin might leave the country or try to harm witnesses in his own case as the government says he did in others.
