June 1884: The Legislature (which held court rule-making power) amended the rule relating to costs in the Supreme Court (the court of general jurisdiction). The rule, denying costs for recoveries less than $200, was eased to allow costs in a case of parties from different counties where recovery was at least $100.

June 1909: Justice James Bergen suspended, on ground of insanity, the execution of Archibald Herron, who was convicted of murdering Samuel Prickett, a former Metuchen police recorder who had sentenced him to jail for disorderly conduct three years earlier. The net effect was an indeterminate prison term.
