A Somerdale man whose leg had to be amputated after a construction accident received a $1.24 million settlement on Oct. 5.

Harry Kates Sr., a mason’s helper, was descending a 36-foot extension ladder at a Maple Shade site on May 16, 2007, when a wire that secured the top of the ladder to a building snapped and he fell eight feet to the ground. He fractured his left leg, which disrupted the blood supply. Kates underwent three operations to repair damaged blood vessels, but a month after the accident his left leg had to be amputated below the knee. Kates, 55, has not worked since then.
