A state appeals court on Thursday upheld more than $1 million in damages in a class-action suit against a consumer-credit company and a company that sells vacuum cleaners door to door, though it struck down a $1 million-plus award of counsel fees and costs.

The three-judge Appellate Division panel affirmed a trial judge’s finding that 16,845 people who bought vacuum cleaners from door-to-door salespeople deserved $100 each in damages due to violations of portions of the Retail Installment Sales Act of 1960.
