New Jersey is suing to block the federal government’s proposed dredging of the Delaware River, charging that plans to dump the potentially toxic sediment in New Jersey would violate a host of federal laws.
Pennsylvania officials are championing the project, which calls for deepening the river’s main ship channel from 40 to 45 feet for 102 miles between Camden and Cape May, because it would permit larger cargo ships to use Pennsylvania ports and would create 1,300 new jobs.
