New Jersey lawyers gathered at the Montclair Art Museum Nov. 17 to honor outstanding pro bono service at the 4th annual Arts & Eats for Justice. Newark’s McCarter & English, Paul Nittoly, a partner with Drinker Biddle & Reath in Florham Park, Elitza Meyer, assistant general counsel of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, and Laurel Dumont, executive director of The Center for Collaborative Change in Newark, all received 2009 pro bono awards for their service to those in need in New Jersey. Julien Neals, corporation counsel for the city of Newark, and Bret Parker, vice president and assistant general counsel of Wyeth (now Pfizer), served as event co-chairmen and masters of ceremony, and U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Mayor Cory Booker served as honorary chairmen of the event. Brielle Attorney Surenian Given Ethics Award

Jeffrey Surenian, who heads a firm in Brielle, received the Michael A. Pane Award for Excellence in Ethics at a presentation Nov. 19 in Atlantic City. The award, which includes a $500 honorarium, is bestowed annually to honor a professional active in local government who has “exemplified the highest standards of ethics and whose work has significantly enhanced the integrity of local government.” The Michael A. Pane Memorial Fund, a nonprofit foundation, was created in 2003 after Pane, a longtime Hightstown solo, passed away.
