Waiting for Guidance — Sentencing in a high-profile public corruption case against two New Jersey lawyers has been put on hold pending the outcome of two appeals argued Dec. 9 in the U.S. Supreme Court, concerning the validity of a federal law that makes it a crime to “deprive another of honest services.”

Bergen County Democratic powerbroker Joseph Ferriero, a one-time partner at Scarinci Hollenbeck in Lyndhurst, was accused of conspiring with Dennis Oury , then Bergenfield’s attorney, to deprive the borough of Oury’s honest services. Ferriero was convicted on three fraud counts on Oct. 22. Oury pleaded guilty on Sept. 29. Neither has been sentenced.
