Plaintiff Yaakov Abdelhak is a practicing Orthodox Jew. Defendant Gabrielle Tito, who was plaintiff’s wife, instituted divorce proceedings. Based on advice purportedly issued by his spiritual adviser, plaintiff took the position that so long as Tito refused to raise their children in the Orthodox tradition, he was not obliged to grant her a Get, which is a religious divorce.
