On Feb. 11, Blake Robbins, a minor, by his parents and natural guardians, filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia against the Lower Merion School District, its board of directors and superintendent of schools, seeking damages based on the school district’s activation of Web cameras on school-issued personal laptop computers, in order to spy on the students while they were using the computers at home.

In particular, the complaint alleges that “unbeknownst to Plaintiffs and the members of the Class, and without their authorization, Defendants have been spying on the activities of Plaintiffs and Class members by Defendants’ indiscriminant [sic] use of and ability to remotely activate the webcams incorporated into each laptop issued to students by the School District.”
