A wellness program is a program designed to encourage employees to improve their health or prevent disease through education, risk assessment and/or screening, or disability management. Wellness programs can take many forms, including fitness center discounts, heart screenings or other diagnostic tests, prenatal care, health coaches, and weight loss or smoking cessation programs. Effective wellness initiatives can be as simple as making fresh fruit available in break rooms to encourage better eating or as extensive as building onsite fitness facilities.
The advantages of employee wellness programs are well known. These programs help employees, by promoting healthier lifestyle choices, and employers, by reducing absenteeism and insurance premiums and improving employee productivity. However, employers must understand the legal requirements and prohibitions before instituting a wellness program.
