The state Supreme Court has not yet agreed to hear an appeal by a coalition of gay rights groups seeking legalized same-sex marriage in New Jersey, but both proponents and opponents are preparing on the assumption that it will.

On Tuesday, in front of the State House in Trenton, the two sides held opposing rallies. The National Organization for Marriage, which is on a 19-state bus tour, warned that same-sex marriage could become legal here through judicial fiat since the state Senate defeated a bill that would legalize it. Garden State Equality, which supports same-sex marriage, held a rally urging the Court to take action.
