An Essex County jury awarded more than $18.36 million on July 16 to three construction workers injured when scaffolding meant to shelter the sidewalk from building-demolition debris fell on them.

According to the suit, Soprano v. Regional Scaffolding & Hoisting Co., the collapse occurred on Sept. 18, 2004, as the three men stood under the scaffolding at the Jersey City site discussing whether to suspend work due to bad weather. The scaffolding was made of steel I-beams, corrugated steel and plywood planks and was designed to hold 90,000 pounds, says one of the plaintiffs’ lawyers, Cornelius Caruso Jr. of Tobin Reitman Greenstein Caruso Wiener & Konray in Rahway.
