For more than 35 years, I have represented individuals catastrophically injured or killed — locally and nationwide — as a result of motor vehicle accidents, defectively designed motor vehicles and helmets. The defects have remained largely the same. What has changed is that, thanks to medical advances, many more victims are surviving crashes and injuries that, just 10 or 15 years ago, would have resulted in their deaths. For the seriously brain-damaged and paralyzed spinal-cord victims, their survival and increased life expectancies necessitate enormous sums of money for medical expenses and for costly functional and psychological problems. It is not unusual for projected lifetime medical expenses alone to exceed $10 million dollars for these victims — and it is up to their attorneys to ensure they receive appropriate compensation to provide for their needs.
This article will discuss how brain injuries occur and design considerations for reducing the severity of these injuries or eliminating them entirely.
