One of Cape May County’s oldest and highest-profile murder prosecutions has been dealt a setback now that a state appeals court has barred use of statements made by the defendant, Dr. George Carty III, during and after a polygraph examination.

The Appellate Division affirmed a trial judge’s ruling that Carty was coerced into taking the exam and was not fully informed of his right against self-incrimination.
