An airport worker who lost an eye and suffered brain trauma when hit by a helicopter blade was paid a $4.35 million settlement on Nov. 18 in Smith v. Smith .

On Sept. 13, 2005, Al Mustafa Smith, then 28, a lineman at Linden Municipal Airport, was refueling a helicopter, a procedure performed with the engine and rotors operational. As he neared the aircraft, he was struck in the head by the main rotor. He lost his left eye and suffered scarring, pain and major head and brain trauma that led to a loss of mental capacity and memory and impaired cognitive functions, according to the suit.
