Our last president tried hard to export democracy to the Middle East, hoping that the democracy of one Arab nation would spread throughout the region, through something reminiscent of the domino theory of the Vietnam War era.

The current administration seems to be of a like mind. In January, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke to world leaders in the Arab community at a summit in Qatar. She urged them to adopt not only democratic reforms but social and financial ones as well.
