In an ideologically charged 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has thrown out a $14 million verdict against the former New Orleans district attorney for several, nearly fatal, Brady violations.

Harry Connick Sr. was Orleans Parish district attorney from 1973 to 2003, and during that time, 36 defendants filed prosecutorial misconduct charges. Nineteen of those convictions were reversed or had sentences significantly shortened. Connick’s office also withheld favorable evidence at trial of nine of the 36 defendants sentenced to death. Four were exonerated.
