Harold Garwin, an advocate for the disabled and president and executive director of the Community Health Law Project, received the 2011 Mary Philbrook Award from the Women’s Law Caucus at the Rutgers Law School-Camden on Sept. 21. The award, named after the first woman admitted to the New Jersey bar, recognizes the achievements of a leading advocate for civil rights, social justice and equality. The Community Health Law Project helps low-income people with disabilities.

Newark Judge Velez-Lopez Retires

Newark Municipal Judge Amilkar Velez-Lopez celebrated his retirement after 11 years on the bench, 20 years in private practice, and 10 years as a social worker, on Sept. 14 at a party in Verona. Municipal Chief Judge Richard Nunes presented Velez-Lopez with a plaque.
