For more than 35 years, I have represented individuals catastrophically injured or killed — locally and nationwide — as a result of motor vehicle accidents and defectively designed motor vehicles. The defects have remained largely the same — seat belt failures, seat back failures and failure to afford proper occupant protection (e.g., crashworthiness, failure of air bags to deploy, sudden acceleration).
What has changed is that, thanks to medical advances, many more victims are surviving crashes and injuries that, just 10 or 15 years ago, would have resulted in their deaths. For the seriously brain damaged and paralyzed spinal cord victims, their survival and increased life expectancies necessitate enormous sums of money for medical expenses and for costly functional and psychological problems. It is not unusual for projected lifetime medical expenses alone to exceed $10 million dollars for these victims — and it is up to their attorneys to ensure they receive appropriate compensation to provide for their needs.
