Longtime Ridgewood municipal judge Philip Sheridan Jr. resigned Tuesday, forced off the bench by new ethics strictures on political donations by law firms that employ local judges.

Sheridan’s 24-year judgeship in the Bergen County town was a casualty of last year’s merger of Herten Burstein Sheridan, Cevasco, Bottinelli, Litt & Harz, where he was a name partner, into Archer & Greiner, a firm that regularly donates to political campaigns.
