Torn Between Two Judges — A federal judge wrongly fined an attorney for causing a half-hour delay in a case when he was unable to extricate himself from another courtroom, an appeals court says.

Michael Orozco, of Bailey & Orozco in Newark, appeared before U.S. District Judge William Walls at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 9, 2011, at a hearing for a former New York police officer serving a 16-year sentence for robbing a Carlstadt warehouse of $500,000 in perfume. The hearing didn’t start until 11 a.m. Walls called a recess at 11:54 a.m. that would last until 12:15 p.m.
