Atlantic City Thrown a Lifeline — Rules are rules, but a trial judge went overboard in finding Atlantic City in default due to its lawyer missing a court appearance.

Ten minutes before a March 16, 2011, hearing in retired city lifeguard Bruce Gitto’s suit over his annual pension, defense lawyer Steven Glickman notified Superior Court Judge Valerie Armstrong he could not attend. He was engaged in an extended trial in Essex County, and on the hearing date, his wife was having surgery.
