After the horror in Sandy Hook, we are again looking for solutions to gun violence. They are complex, but there are some areas that can be clearly dealt with.

One solution is to close the gun-show loophole. This is a very real problem. Ordinarily, when someone buys a gun at a gun shop, the seller conducts a background check by contacting the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. However, when a buyer seeks to purchase a firearm at a gun show or elsewhere from a nonprofessional gun merchant, that consumer need not undergo the otherwise mandatory background check.
