Benjamin Franklin is said to have described New Jersey as a barrel “tapped at both ends,” situated in the shadow of two major East Coast cities, New York and Philadelphia. This saying could apply equally to New Jersey’s legal market as it relates to the prevalence — or lack thereof — of women and minority lawyers.
Recently, others have examined the status of women and minority lawyers in legal firms around New Jersey and noted a trend of stagnant growth. While no one reason has been offered, if the statistics are to change, the cause must be identified and addressed. Some would argue that firms have not done enough to spur growth of women and minorities. Perhaps there are other, less tangible reasons why New Jersey law firms, despite real efforts to improve the numbers, have fallen short.
