Most of us tend to lean on key people. I’m certainly no exception to that rule. When we have a pressing problem, I first try to resolve it independently. If I can’t, I pick up the phone and instinctively dial one of a few numbers. When an especially valued client needs a report or system feature posing a challenging deadline, there is no doubt who I will call.
Sports are no different. Joe Girardi, the manager of the New York Yankees, always knew he’d call for number 42, Mariano Rivera, to douse the flames. In critical moments, Eric Spoelstra, head coach of the Miami Heat basketball team, generally gives the ball to King James (LeBron James). None of this is brain surgery.
