The New Jersey Supreme Court is grappling with how lawyers and judges should carry out a federal-state mandate that immigrant defendants be informed of the deportation consequences of pleading guilty to certain crimes.

The question raised in State v. Lipa, argued Monday, is whether aliens—illegal aliens—should be told they “may” be deported, are “more than likely” to be deported, “will” be deported or if there should be some other phraseology.
