A New Jersey appeals court has upheld a $5 million judgment, most of it in punitive damages, against a Chevrolet dealer in a suit by a family injured in an accident caused by a tire blowout.

The court rejected numerous claims of trial error, including the allowance of punitive damages, saying that Essex County Judge W. Hunt Dumont “correctly applied the legal standards embodied in the Punitive Damages Act” and “did not abuse discretion in submitting the matter for the jury’s consideration.”
