A town official can be convicted of taking bribes to steer local school board contracts, even though there was no way he could follow through on his promises, a federal appeals court says.

Affirming the conviction of former Mayor John Bencivengo, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit held Wednesday it is sufficient that the briber believes the public official paid can influence governmental action.
