Using dehumanizing language at work makes us less human and more beholden to impersonal systems, not to people. That sounds like the Borg in “Star Trek: Voyager” speaking, but there is something to the idea, according to a new book by Christian Madsbjerg and Mikkel B. Rasmussen, titled “The Moment of Clarity: Using the Human Sciences To Solve Your Toughest Business Problems.”
Here is a quick test to gauge the level of demonizing language in your workplace. Do colleagues say “firing,” or are they using “right-sizing”? Do they speak of doing the easiest things first or “picking the low-hanging fruit”? Do they look at where the company’s products are sold or “evaluate the channel mix”? Do they promote employees or “leverage human resources”?
