Earlier this year, the superstore Walmart added legal representation to its selection of services offered to shoppers. According to The Toronto Star, Walmart joined forces with Axess Law to provide affordable (or discounted) legal services to shoppers. Yes, that’s Canada, not the U.S. But, the possibility of mainstreaming legal representation here is quite real. It’s already begun with software like Legal Zoom.
Providing readily accessible and affordable legal services to the public is a progressive notion that could benefit all parties. However, what impact can this have on the legal community? Competition among law firms will certainly increase and drive a focus on making the “law” big business. Axess Law offers office hours until 8:00 p.m. seven days a week. Local law firms will be forced to compete with these flexible hours.
