New Jersey’s first black female assignment judge will take charge of the Monmouth County courts come Sept. 1.

Superior Court Judge Lisa Thornton will replace current Assignment Judge Lawrence Lawson, who had held that spot for 21 years. When Lawson started in that role, in 1993, he was the first African-American assignment judge of any gender.
